The Summer Event Series builds on feedback received during the initial Vision Zero outreach initiative in the West Side to reflect community members’ interests regarding engagement efforts around traffic safety. The three events which have been scheduled between August and September 2018 will provide an opportunity to continue designing an outreach and engagement process that can be replicated in other communities, identify innovative community-driven strategies and actions to improve traffic safety in the West Side. In addition, through these events, Vision Zero seeks to increase knowledge and self-awareness of dangerous behaviors on the road to reduce traffic crashes, and launch a sustainable, accessible equitable program that can continue in the community after the event series.
These events have not been designed as stand-alone events, but rather, as complements to already establish community-led events. By doing so, Vision Zero builds on the assets from the West Side, through supporting community partners and their priorities. A number of different activities from a Vision Zero event menu are been tailored to accommodate the Vision Zero presence and activities within the community events to ensure successful engagement outcomes.
Events will be held in three communities located within Vision Zero High Crash Areas:
– North Lawndale
– East/West Garfield Park
– Austin
