In the summer of 2017, the Chicago Department of Transportation implemented changes to Milwaukee Avenue between Western Avenue and Division Street to enhance the safety of the corridor for people walking, biking, riding transit, and driving. The changes are part of the Vision Zero Chicago initiative and were implemented as a pilot of CDOT’s Rapid Delivery Projects — low-cost, “quick-hit” changes to the street to promptly improve traffic safety.

To assess the effect of the improvements on traffic safety, CDOT conducted an evaluation study on the Milwaukee Avenue Rapid Delivery Project. The study shows that after the project was implemented, people biking are less likely to ride in the door zone, people driving stop more often for people crossing at uncontrolled crosswalks, and people are driving along the corridor at safer speeds. The report includes background on the planning process and more details on the safety improvements for all street users along the Milwaukee Avenue corridor.
